Simon C asked:

When you go to buy a book for your child, what is it that you look for? I’m curious for all age groups.

-Well known characters or franchise?
-How educational the book is?
-Lessons taught?
-If it has weapons or fighting in it?
-Book genre?
-The length?
-The cost?
-If it’s illustrated or not?
-The quality of the illustrations?
-The style of artwork?
etc etc.

I ask because I recently began work illustrating a children’s book (9-12 range). I’m curious to find out how much the artwork would influence a parent’s choice, if at all. Is it something that factors into your decision or do you feel illustrations are just fluff? What do you feel *is* important?

Oh, and I don’t mean the book cover, I mean illustrations within the book :]

I have to pick a classic for a book report but I can’t usually get through the ones like “Heidi” and such.

Please don’t tell me I haven’t read any good literature and how bad that is. But I like books that make you feel and that you can escape into. I haven’t run into a classic like that.

Any ideas?

I am overseas- and want to have a new/gently used bookstore for children and home schooling parents. I also want to have a mobile bookstore (bookmobile) to take to schools. (The mobile bookstore may happen first!) I need to order about 10,000 used/like new books. I saw a few lots on ebay but all less than 200 books. I need fiction and non-fiction, board books, beg. readers, popular story books, chapter books, science, animals, math, history, arts and crafts, home school curriculum books, how to help children with special needs-esp. autism and cerebral palsey, educational cd’s, and much more. Scholastic, Golden books, Troll, DK, Harcourt, Zoobooks, Usborne, Time childrens books etc. I want books to get children excited about reading and learning and to keep them reading and to help parents too. Thank you for any help you may have.

I wanna read some more classic books to keep me busy during the summer, and to get an excuse from not doing my work…>D
The only ones I know that people like are Pride and Prejudice, Gone with the Wind, and Sense and Sensibility.
Also, I want to read Wuthering Heights but I’m not sure many people like that one.

My 6 yr. old is reading fluently. Right now he reads the books that are part of his reading curriculum or Garfield comic books. I’d like to find him some books with substance. I have heard about great classics that are condensed for young readers. Does anyone know where I can find these books?

We are elementary school teachers looking at “classic” literature and are curious about your ideas as to what makes a book a “classic” and what books of today will be tomorrow’s classics. It may be the kind of thing that you don’t know until you see it, but we are interested in your opinions. Thanks!

I love writing and I love reading girly novels. I don’t mind grammar and literary terms. But all through high school, I could never get myself to read the classic novels that were assigned. I would do anything not to actually read them…like look at cliff notes and summaries online.

Will that make me a good teacher since I will understand the challenges of reading these books?

Or will I **** my life?
